Building a lift precisely is my joy and pleasure. For you, it takes someone like me to precisely build the lift but you also need someone to accurately measure your leg length differential. If the measurement is not right, the lift won’t be right.
The most accurate measurements are in millimeters and are determined by an x-ray based on my experience.
While I am not trained to take or read an x-ray, I can help connect you with a medical professional in your area who can help.
Please take the time to get an accurate measurement. There’s no worse feeling than taking the time and money to precisely build a lift that is not the right height.
Contact us if you want a referral of a medical professional in your area who might be able to help get you the accurate measurement you need to get the lift right.
If you are a medical professional, or know a medical professional who is well versed in measuring for a leg length differential, contact us here so we can add this person to the database of folks well versed in LLD.
Leg length discrepancy (LLD) can be measured using several methods:
- Tape measurement: The length of each lower extremity can be measured by detecting the exact distance between the anterior superior iliac spine (front protruding bone of the pelvis) and the medial malleolus (ankle bone). A tailor’s tape can be used to measure the length accurately while lying down. The discrepancy can be found by comparing each leg.
- Standing on the block: Various sizes of blocks are placed under the shorter limb to level the pelvis. This method is more accurate than the tape measurement method.
- Computed Radiography: This is an advanced process of assessing LLD by taking a full-length, standing radiograph using customized software to obtain quality radiographs.
- CT Scan: Digital images can be obtained while the patient lies on the table of a CT scanner. A collimated x-ray beam is used to move the scanner.
Leg length discrepancy can be measured using various methods such as tape measurement, standing on the block, radiography, computed radiography, and CT scan. It is important to accurately detect the reasons for the apparent discrepancy by measuring the motion range of the knee, hip, and ankle. However, it is essential to note that these tips are for informational purposes only and should not be used as a substitute for professional medical advice. It is always best to consult with a professional doctor for the most accurate information regarding leg length discrepancy and any other medical conditions.
